Keeping your Christmas tree fresh
By following a few simple rules you will be able to keep your Christmas tree smelling and looking fresh throughout the Christmas period.
- If you are buying your tree early in December then it is best to initially keep your tree outside, as the longer time it spends inside with your cosy central heating the quicker it will dry out!
- On arriving home with your tree, cut off the netting to allow the branches to settle, and saw off about half an inch (2.5cm) from its base in order to open up its pores – just as you would do with fresh flowers. Next, put it in a bucket of water and keep it outside in a shady, sheltered spot until you're ready to bring it indoors.
- When you do bring it indoors, cut another 1cm off the bottom to ensure that the tree will continue to take up water once in the house. Keep the base of the tree submerged in water; if the water level goes below the bottom of the base of the tree it will seal up and will not be able to absorb the water. So the water level should be checked daily.
Doing this will keep your Christmas tree fresh for the whole of the Christmas period!
